The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed as false a graphic circulating online claiming that the commission has set March 26 as the deadline for government officials seeking elective positions to resign from office.
In a public notice shared on its official X handle, the electoral body said the message did not originate from the commission and described it as fake and misleading.
INEC stated that it had not issued any announcement regarding a resignation deadline for public office holders intending to contest in future elections.
“The attention of the Commission has been drawn to a graphic currently circulating online claiming that the Commission has announced March 26 as the deadline for government officials seeking election to resign,” INEC said.
“The Commission wishes to state clearly that the information is false and did not emanate from INEC.”
The commission urged members of the public, media organisations and political stakeholders to disregard the circulating message entirely, warning that sharing unverified information could mislead the public.
INEC also reiterated that all official updates and announcements from the electoral body are communicated only through its verified channels.
According to the commission, authentic information can be obtained through its official website, verified social media accounts, and formal press releases issued by the commission.
INEC further encouraged citizens to verify election-related information before sharing it, noting that it remains committed to providing accurate, timely and transparent information to the public.
