Several drones fell near Dubai International Airport on Wednesday, injuring four people, while commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz were also struck, as Iran intensified attacks across the Gulf amid the ongoing Middle East conflict.
Dubai authorities confirmed that two drones fell near the airport, injuring four individuals, including two Ghanaian nationals, one Bangladeshi, and one Indian, as Iranian-launched drones impacted near the aviation hub. Despite the incident, officials said air traffic has continued to operate normally.
In addition to the drone strikes, maritime disruptions were reported in the region. A container ship and a bulk carrier were hit off the coast of the United Arab Emirates, one near Dubai and the other off Ras Al Khaimah, according to alerts from the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations. A third vessel was struck off Oman, sparking a fire that was later extinguished.
The attacks underline escalating tensions linked to the broader conflict involving United States and Israel, which have seen strikes and counterstrikes across the region. Iran has repeatedly targeted civilian infrastructure and key energy routes, including shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway through which nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply normally passes, leading to disruptions and increased volatility in global markets.
Saudi Arabia has also reported intercepting drones and ballistic missiles targeting its energy infrastructure, while energy installations in Kuwait and Qatar have faced attacks, highlighting the broad regional impact of the conflict.
