Senegal’s Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, has strongly criticised former U.S. President Donald Trump over the ongoing US-Israel war against Iran, accusing him of contributing to global instability and failing to achieve strategic objectives.
Speaking on Thursday at an international conference on sovereignty held in Dakar, Sonko said recent military and political developments surrounding Iran had failed to deliver their intended outcomes, while instead plunging the world into chaos.
“Reducing Iran’s ballistic capabilities has not been achieved. Forcing Iran to abandon all nuclear programmes, both civilian and military, is not an objective that has been achieved,” he said.
He added that the escalation had only worsened global tensions rather than resolving the conflict.
“None of the objectives has been met, and yet the world has been plunged into chaos that nothing can justify. Mr Trump is not a man of peace; he is a man who destabilises the world,” Sonko declared.
The Senegalese leader made the remarks during discussions on global sovereignty and the shifting balance of international power, where speakers also examined the rise of the Global South and demands for greater equality in global decision-making.
French political scientist Pascal Boniface, who hosted the conference, said the world is undergoing a major geopolitical shift driven by emerging powers challenging Western dominance.
“Westerners have not lost power, they have not lost wealth; they have lost their monopoly on them,” Boniface said, adding that global governance should reflect equality among nations rather than hierarchy.
Sonko, meanwhile, called for stronger unity among African nations, stressing the need for collective action and greater involvement of the continent’s youth in shaping sovereignty and development.
He described Africa’s young population as a key force that must be mobilised if the continent is to achieve meaningful political and economic independence in a rapidly changing global order.
