U.S. President Donald J. Trump has launched a scathing attack on Pope Leo, accusing the Catholic leader of weak positions on crime and foreign policy in a lengthy statement shared online.
Posting on Truth Social , Trump wrote, “Pope Leo is WEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy.”
The former president criticised the pope’s handling of issues related to Christian worship during the COVID-19 pandemic, claiming churches and religious leaders were unfairly targeted by authorities during lockdowns.
“He talks about ‘fear of the Trump Administration’ but doesn’t mention the FEAR that the Catholic Church, and all other Christian organizations, had during COVID when they were arresting priests, ministers, and everybody else, for holding Church Services,” Trump said.
Trump also criticised what he suggested were the pope’s positions on global security, including nuclear policy.
“I don’t want a Pope who thinks it’s OK for Iran to have a Nuclear Weapon,” he wrote.
The former U.S. leader also defended his administration’s immigration policies, arguing they were designed to protect the United States from criminal elements entering the country.
“I don’t want a Pope who criticizes the President of the United States because I’m doing exactly what I was elected to do,” Trump said, adding that his policies had resulted in “record low numbers in crime” and a strong stock market.
Trump further claimed that the Catholic Church may have selected the American-born pope partly for political reasons.
“He wasn’t on any list to be Pope, and was only put there by the Church because he was an American, and they thought that would be the best way to deal with President Donald J. Trump,” he wrote.
The former president also criticised the pope’s engagement with individuals he described as political opponents, including political strategist David Axelrod, a former adviser to Barack Obama.
“Leo should get his act together as Pope, use common sense, stop catering to the Radical Left, and focus on being a great Pope, not a politician,” Trump stated.
He concluded by warning that mixing religion with politics could damage both the pontiff’s standing and the global reputation of the Catholic Church.
“It’s hurting him very badly and, more importantly, it’s hurting the Catholic Church,” Trump added.
