Iran has warned that the United States will “bitterly regret” sinking one of its naval vessels near Sri Lanka, sharply escalating tensions between the two countries amid an already volatile regional conflict.
Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, condemned the incident, accusing Washington of carrying out what he described as an “atrocity at sea” after an American submarine allegedly struck the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena in international waters.
In a statement posted on X, Araghchi said the warship was attacked without warning while sailing thousands of miles from Iran’s shores.
“The US has perpetrated an atrocity at sea, 2,000 miles away from Iran’s shores. Frigate Dena, a guest of India’s Navy carrying almost 130 sailors, was struck in international waters without warning,” he wrote.
He added that Washington would face consequences for the attack.
“Mark my words: The US will come to bitterly regret the precedent it has set,” the Iranian foreign minister warned.
