Former Manchester City and Ivory Coast midfielder, Yaya Toure, has described Nigeria’s Super Eagles as the most impressive team at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Speaking in an interview with Bleacher Report Football, the four-time African Footballer of the Year praised the Super Eagles for their attacking style, goal-scoring prowess and overall performances throughout the tournament.
Nigeria, coached by Eric Chelle, enjoyed an impressive AFCON campaign, going unbeaten until their semi-final clash against hosts Morocco. The Super Eagles scored 14 goals and conceded just four during the competition before narrowly losing 4–2 on penalties to Morocco. They later secured third place by defeating Egypt in another penalty shootout.
“I was impressed with Nigeria,” Toure said. “They played good football. When you look at the statistics, they were scoring a lot of goals, playing full attack and very attractive football. For me, the most impressive team at the tournament was Nigeria.”
While highlighting Nigeria as his top team, Toure also praised other sides at the competition, including Algeria and finalists Morocco. He described the Moroccan team as “very pragmatic and direct,” noting their effectiveness on the counterattack despite losing the final to Senegal.
The former Barcelona midfielder further commended DR Congo for their spirited display and reflected on his home country, Ivory Coast, admitting the team showed promise but lacked experience at crucial moments.
“Well, Congo was also good. I like Congo. They did well until they were knocked out by Algeria. Ivory Coast were a young team, sometimes a bit naive, but that’s part of football and learning,” he added.
