The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that Morocco will host the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2026, dispelling recent speculation about a possible postponement or change of venue.
CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe made the announcement following a CAF Executive Committee meeting in Dar es Salaam, stating that the tournament will run as scheduled from March 17 to April 3, 2026.
Addressing rumours of a potential change in host nation, Motsepe said,
“There is discussion taking place, and a lot of competitions. Morocco came to assist. There were many countries that wanted to host it, but because we didn’t have time and our standards were very high… WAFCON continues, as we speak now, we still have an engagement with Morocco.”
He further emphasised that the tournament schedule is fixed to align with FIFA regulations, as WAFCON serves as a key qualifier for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
“We can’t change the date because it is part of the qualification pathway for the Women’s World Cup. WAFCON will continue and it will be successful,” Motsepe added.
This will be the third consecutive edition of WAFCON hosted by Morocco, following the 2022 and 2024 tournaments. While South African officials had expressed readiness to step in as an alternative host if needed, CAF has reaffirmed its commitment to Morocco as the venue for the 2026 competition.
