Chairman of BUA Group, Abdul Samad Rabiu, has announced that he will donate $500,000 to the Super Eagles of Nigeria despite the team’s defeat in the semi-final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Nigeria on Wednesday suffered a 4–2 penalty shoot-out loss to hosts Morocco after a tense encounter that ended goalless following 120 minutes of regulation and extra time. Missed penalties by Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi proved decisive in the shoot-out.
Before the match, Rabiu had pledged to reward the Super Eagles with $500,000 if they defeated Morocco, with an additional $50,000 for every goal scored. However, the business mogul confirmed he would still honour the pledge despite the team’s failure to reach the final.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) after the match, Rabiu described the donation as a “token of appreciation” for the players’ effort, commitment and the joy they brought to Nigerians throughout the tournament.
“In recognition of your hard work, dedication, and the joy you have brought to our nation,” Rabiu wrote.
He praised the Super Eagles for their courage and determination, noting that they fought bravely and made the country proud despite the painful loss.
“You fought with your hearts, gave your all, and showed true courage and determination on the pitch,” he said.
“Though it wasn’t meant to be this time, you have made every Nigerian proud.”
Rabiu added that even when results do not go as planned, the spirit, unity and passion displayed by the team are what truly matter and deserve celebration.
The Super Eagles will now shift focus to Saturday’s third-place playoff against Egypt, where they will compete for the bronze medal at AFCON 2025.
