American missionary and activist, Alex Barbir, has issued a powerful call to action for Nigerian Christians, urging them to speak out against violence and injustice amid rising insecurity in the country.
Speaking during a public address, Barbir highlighted what he described as the silencing of Christians in Nigeria, emphasizing that the loss of life has often been overshadowed amid political debates.
“If you have no right to live, what life do you have? While people are fighting for elections, and painting banners of Tinubu, and everybody’s worrying about APC, PDP, LP, you are being killed. At what point will the people care about life?” Barbir said.
He criticised the tendency of authorities and society to prioritise political interests over citizens’ safety, adding that his presence in Nigeria is intended to draw attention to ongoing killings and the denial of basic rights.
Barbir recently released a video documenting the Palm Sunday killings in Anguwan Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State, which has circulated widely online. In the video, he condemned the “persistent targeting of innocent Christians,” questioning the government’s response.
“This is Rukuba. Over 10 innocent Christians were murdered on Palm Sunday. Where are you as your people are slaughtered in the night? Sitting in Aso Rock, you are doing absolutely nothing. When will it stop? When will you hear the cries of Nigerians? You can no longer deny genocide,” Barbir said.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers, reportedly dressed in military uniforms, stormed the community around 8 pm, opening fire in a busy market area, leaving at least 12 dead and several injured. Residents described the chaos as indiscriminate, highlighting growing fears over security in Plateau State.
Barbir also revealed that some officials had questioned his right to speak on these matters, with threats of arrest from the Department of State Services (DSS), highlighting the resistance faced by those raising concerns about insecurity in Nigeria.
"If you have no right to breathe, what right do you have? While people are fighting for elections, and painting banners of Tinubu, and everybody's worrying about APC, PDP, LP, you are being killed. At what point will the people care about life?”
