Senate President Godswill Akpabio ignited plenary laughter Thursday when he dramatically declared “Oh, PDP is gone” while reading the defection letter of former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Presenting Tambuwal’s letter during Senate proceedings, Akpabio seized the moment to mock the opposition, suggesting PDP’s collapse with his theatrical remark. The comment drew widespread applause from APC senators and visible discomfort from PDP ranks.
Tambuwal, a serving Senator representing Sokoto South, cited “personal convictions and national interest” as reasons for his switch, joining a growing list of high-profile PDP defections to APC.
Tambuwal’s move further erodes PDP’s Senate presence, following earlier defections that have significantly reduced their numbers. APC now enjoys comfortable legislative majority, making opposition resistance increasingly symbolic.
