The Labour Party Nigeria has officially zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the southern region of the country, effectively ruling out aspirants from Northern Nigeria.
The party’s Acting National Chairperson, Nenadi Usman, confirmed the decision while speaking with journalists in Abuja on Tuesday.
“We have one certain decision that we have taken, and that is that we will certainly not field any aspirant from northern Nigeria,” she said. “We have zoned the position to Southern Nigeria. So if any northerner comes now to want to contest elections, we certainly will not accept that.”
The announcement signals a major political move ahead of the 2027 general elections, as zoning remains a key factor in Nigeria’s power-sharing arrangement between the North and South.
Although the party has yet to release further details on the modalities for selecting its candidate.
