The Delta State Ministry of Secondary Education has officially prohibited the celebration of Valentine parties in all public and private secondary schools across the state, citing concerns over academic performance and students’ moral development.
The directive was conveyed in a circular dated February 11, 2026, and signed by the Honourable Commissioner for Secondary Education, Dr. Kingsley Nze Ashibogwu, JP. The memo was addressed to Chief Inspectors of Education, field offices of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, and all school heads in the state.
According to the Ministry, the decision followed observations that Valentine celebrations had become widespread in schools but had not contributed positively to academic excellence. Authorities noted that both students and teachers had increasingly participated in organising such events across public and private institutions.
The Ministry stressed that students should be encouraged to devote their time and energy to meaningful teaching and learning activities rather than social events that could disrupt academic focus. It warned school authorities against promoting activities capable of creating “learning glitches” among students.
The circular further emphasised that the Delta State Government remains committed to strengthening educational standards and discouraging practices that may undermine both moral values and academic discipline within schools.
“School heads (Public & Private) are hereby informed that celebration of Valentine parties in schools by school authorities are prohibited in the State,” the statement read.
The Ministry urged full compliance from all school administrators, reiterating its commitment to improving the overall quality of education in Delta State.
