Nollywood actress and filmmaker Toyin Abraham has been honoured by the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) with a recognition award for her historic box office achievement.
The award comes after her film Oversabi Aunty grossed over ₦1 billion, making it the fourth highest-grossing Nollywood film of all time. Toyin Abraham shared the moment on her X (formerly Twitter) page on Thursday, describing it as a major milestone in her career.
“Today, the National Film and Video Censors Board, NFVCB, hosted me and presented me with a recognition award for grossing over a billion naira at the box office, and for being the first solo director to achieve such a feat with a debut project,” Abraham wrote. She added, “This is a huge honor, one I deeply cherish and appreciate, especially coming from such a reputable organization.”
The event was further elevated by the presence of Olori Temitope Enitan-Ogunwusi, who commended the film’s impact on families. Abraham recalled, “Even more humbling was hearing her share how Oversabi Aunty inspired her to reevaluate how she relates with her children.”
Reflecting on the film’s message, Toyin Abraham said, “Oversabi Aunty is more than just a film; it is a wake-up call for families, especially mothers, to realize that there is more to raising a child than shouting or reacting dramatically.”
She also thanked her supporters and partners, including FilmOne, for their role in her journey: “Thank you to everyone who showed up today, sent kind words, and to those who are genuinely happy to see the efforts of a young woman being recognized and celebrated. The greatest fan in the world, Toyintitans, I see you and I love you all. My partners FilmOne, thank you for being there every step of the way. This is the first of many.”
With this recognition, Toyin Abraham cements her status as a leading Nollywood filmmaker, achieving a landmark box office milestone and inspiring a new generation of filmmakers.
