Céline Dion, the iconic Canadian singer, has announced her highly anticipated return to the stage, four years after being diagnosed with Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS), a rare neurological condition that affected her singing voice and mobility.
The star, celebrated for timeless hits like My Heart Will Go On and Because You Loved Me, will perform a 10-night residency at the 40,000-capacity Paris La Défense Arena this September and October. The announcement coincided with her 58th birthday, which Dion described as “the best gift of my life.”
“I’m so ready to do this,” she told fans. “I’m feeling good, I’m strong, I’m feeling excited, obviously, [and] of course, a little nervous.”
Dion addressed her health publicly, emphasizing that she has been managing SPS successfully:
“I’m doing great, managing my health, feeling good. I’m singing again, even doing a little bit of dancing. Every day, I felt your prayers, your kindness and love. I am grateful to all of you. I can’t wait to see you again.”
The singer’s Courage tour was cut short in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and her subsequent diagnosis forced her to cancel all future shows. SPS, which affects roughly 8,000 people worldwide, disrupts nerve signals to muscles, causing painful spasms and mobility challenges. There is currently no known cure.
To accommodate her recovery, the comeback shows are spaced several days apart, minimizing physical strain. Tickets will go on sale from 7 April, but fans can register interest starting 31 March on her official website.
Dion’s return was celebrated across Paris: posters featuring her lyrics appeared around the city, and the Eiffel Tower lit up with the words, “Paris, je suis prête” (Paris, I am ready). A playlist of her hits, including I’m Alive, Encore Un Soir, and My Heart Will Go On, accompanied the display, and a French version of her video message was played over loudspeakers.
The singer has described Paris as a special city in her heart, saying in 2024, “I want to love more when I’m in Paris. It makes me love things more.” Her comeback included a memorable performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she sang Édith Piaf’s Hymne à l’Amour from the Eiffel Tower.
