The Benin Traditional Council has expressed outrage over the unauthorised visit of popular streamer Habeeb Hamzat Adelaja, also known as Peller, to the Oba of Benin Palace, describing the incident as a grave violation of palace protocols.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by its Secretary, Frank Irabor, the council said the March 6 visit amounted to a “serious breach of protocol” and a “desecration of the sacred precincts” of the palace.
According to the council, Peller gained access to the palace premises without the required approval and carried out activities deemed inappropriate within the revered environment, causing embarrassment and disruption.
“The palace is not a public thoroughfare or a location for frivolous content creation; it is the ancient and spiritual seat of the Oba of Benin, governed by centuries of tradition, custom, and sacred protocols,” the statement read.
Following a preliminary investigation, the council disclosed that disciplinary measures have been taken against individuals who facilitated the unauthorised entry. A chief implicated in the incident has been suspended indefinitely, while a staff member identified as Mr. Omuemu has been detained by the Nigeria Police Force and charged to court for allegedly aiding the breach.
The council also revealed that a queen who appeared in the controversial footage is currently facing disciplinary proceedings, which may lead to her removal from the palace in line with Benin customs and traditions.
Furthermore, the council confirmed that it had invited Peller to appear before a committee of chiefs to explain his actions, but he has yet to honour the invitation. It has now issued a fresh directive for him to present himself and tender an unreserved written apology or risk legal action.
Reaffirming its role as custodian of Benin heritage, the council stressed that it would not tolerate actions that undermine the sanctity of the palace or the authority of Oba Ewuare II.
