Organisers of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) have announced the nominees for the 12th edition of the annual film and television awards, with “Gingerrr” and “The Herd” emerging as the top contenders after securing nine nominations each.
The nominations were revealed on Sunday during a live announcement broadcast across Africa Magic channels and hosted by actor Chimezie Imo.
Close behind the two frontrunners is “To Kill A Monkey,” which received eight nominations, while “My Father’s Shadow” earned seven nods, underscoring what organisers described as a strong year for African film and television.
Both “Gingerrr” and “The Herd” recorded significant commercial success following their release in late 2025, further cementing their positions among the most talked-about productions ahead of the awards ceremony.
In the acting categories, several established Nollywood stars and emerging talents secured nominations. Veteran actress Sola Sobowale earned nominations in both lead and supporting categories, while actors such as Uzor Arukwe and Lateef Adedimeji also received multiple nods.
Meanwhile, actress Genoveva Umeh secured her first-ever AMVCA nomination for Best Lead Actress, positioning her as one of the notable contenders ahead of the awards night.
Voting for public categories opened at 8:00 p.m. on March 29 through the official AMVCA website. The awards feature 32 categories, including 18 jury-decided awards, 11 determined by public voting, and three special recognition honours.
The 12th edition of the AMVCA is scheduled to hold on May 9, 2026, with expectations high for another celebration of excellence across Africa’s film and television industry.
At the previous edition of the awards, “Freedom Way” won Best Movie, while “Seven Doors” dominated several acting categories. Actors including Femi Adebayo and Chioma Chukwuka-Akpotha took home the lead acting awards, while Awam Amkpa won Best Director.
