The Delta State Government has strongly condemned reported cases of rape and harassment of women during the recent Ozoro Festival, describing the incidents as barbaric, unacceptable, and a gross violation of human dignity.
In a statement issued on Friday, the State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, expressed deep concern over reports that some women were harassed and, in certain cases, sexually assaulted under the guise of festival activities.
Aniagwu emphasized that the government maintains zero tolerance for all forms of gender-based violence and warned that cultural celebrations must never be used as a cover for criminal acts.
“The Delta State Government strongly condemns the rape and harassment of women during the Ozoro Festival. Such acts are inhumane and have no place in our society,” he stated.
He called on the Nigeria Police and other relevant security agencies to immediately launch a thorough investigation into the incidents and ensure that all perpetrators are identified, apprehended, and brought to justice.
“We have directed security agencies to fish out those responsible for these heinous crimes. No individual or group will be allowed to hide under the guise of cultural festivities to violate the rights of others,” Aniagwu added.
The commissioner further reassured residents of the government’s commitment to protecting the safety and rights of all citizens, particularly women and other vulnerable groups.
He also urged community leaders and organizers of cultural events across the state to put in place adequate security measures to safeguard participants and prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
The Delta State Government reiterated its stance against gender-based violence, stressing that anyone found culpable will face the full weight of the law.
