Senior Advocate of Nigeria Femi Falana has unleashed scathing criticism against NNPC’s total reliance on Dangote Refinery while Nigeria’s four state-owned refineries remain dormant despite $2.9 billion in repair funds.
Falana questioned the mysterious silence surrounding Nigeria’s Port Harcourt, Warri, Kaduna, and Dangote refineries.
“If we say we have four refineries, nobody is talking about them any longer. The NNPC now solely relies on the Dangote Refinery,” he said. “Is that how to run a country? After carrying money down the drain, about $2.9 billion was spent on the maintenance of our four refineries.”
The legal heavyweight highlighted NNPC’s complete pivot to private sector refining after years of failed rehabilitation efforts across state facilities. Falana’s remarks expose the stark contrast between government expenditure and operational reality.
Falana also urged Nigeria to mount diplomatic pressure against US President Donald Trump’s foreign policy, accusing him of contempt for 66 UN resolutions. He called for collaboration with Russia and China to influence Iran amid escalating tensions.
“President Trump has no regard and shows contempt for international law.”
On internal security, Falana advocated strengthening Nigeria’s own institutions rather than foreign dependency. “We must learn from Iran that unless you reorganise your own country, unless you equip your armed forces and your police force,” he stressed.
